Klunk When I Shift into Reverse
Well, I'm new at this but here goes.
I have a 1984 300D Turbo Diesel sedan with 307,000 miles. Since I received the car at around 300,000 miles, it has clunked when I put it into reverse, whether hot or cold. The clunk is strong enough to raise the rear of the car a bit. It goes into drive just fine. If the car is rolling backward at 1 - 2 mph (such as down the driveway) it won't clunk, but engages ok. The vacuum system is being replaced one hose at a time, and doesn't seem to have any impact on this problem. Any ideas on this one? Thank you. John |

This is normal. The klunk noise is normal, the raising rear end is normal. All three of my cars have done this, every old mercedes ive seen does it

I have the same forward or back on the wifes car. Perhaps adjustment of the modulator is needed?

I have often wondered about this myself. Would it have something to do with the way the susp is set up and the driveline pre-load?...kind of like the 'squat' of the rear when you load up a drag car(but in reverse of course) I've even noticed a slight bouncing when waiting at a stoplight.

Same here
My 1983 300D turbo does the same! I flipped out when it first did that because I thought I blew the tranny!

A high idle could cause the gears in the differential to slam in gear when D or R is selected. Perhaps a lack of vacuum as well. Wear and play in the differential gears also could cause the clunking.
The raising and lowering of the rear can be fixed by putting in a new differential mount (and consequently, new subframe mounts). With a new differential mount, the car still raises and lowers in the back when R or D (respectively) is selected, but the amount of movement is greatly reduced.

I had this issue when I got mine a few years ago. I was certain that the rear end was shot. In the end, it turned out to be a combination of bad aftermarket (auto parts store) axles and improper vacuum adjustment.
Squatting and Lifting in the 80's MB's is normal.

Squatting and lifting in the 80's MB's is only "normal" until you replace the worn out differential mount.
