240D wont turn off?

Been away from the forum for quite a spell, and havent really driven my 240D much last winter, but now when I turn the key off, it still runs. I can remember reading, and have done some searches, to know it is a vaccuum problem. What I need is a step by step to track down the culprit. I have a mighty vac, so if someone wishes to enlighten me, I would appreciate it.
thanks,
coadman

Thank goodness this is a manual, as I can still kill the motor!

Pull a vacuum on each of the various systems under the hood to see which one is leaking: Shut off system, door system. I don't think you have any vacuum controls in your climate system on that car. Simplest test is to put the Mity Vac on the shut off valve itself and see if it holds vacuum. Start the engine, pull the vacuum. If the car shuts down, the problem is elsewhere.

There is a shut off valve on the back, fire wall side of the injection pump. It`s round and has a vacumm hose going to it.You can try to turn it off, take the key out and lock the door ,that may shut it off until you can fix it.

I had a shut off problem, when I applied vacuum at the valve, it shut off. Traced back to it tho, there was oil dripping from the ignition switch. I installed a new shut off valve, solved.
But as kerry mentioned, start plugging off potential leaks. One car I had, I plugged off the door locks, solved, albeit, no power locks.
Good luck.

My door locks have not worked for some time. I have done some more reading, so will start with the mighty vac on the back of the vacuum valve on IP and see what that does, and go from there.

pulled a vacuum, and the motor promptly shut down. That means the shut off valve/diaphram is ok, right? Now, where do I continue my troubleshooting? As I stated, my door locks have never worked since I have had this car(about a year)
thanks,
coadman

Pull a vacuum on the yellow line under the hood and see if it holds. If it doesn't you have a leak in the door lock system. My solution at that point would tend to be to simply leave the door lock system disconnected and drive on my merry way, living the life of a medieval with manual door locks. Such philistine behavior will be rejected by more respectable forum members who will trace down the precise source of the door lock leak at the junctions under the driver's floor mat and replace the offending leaking vacuum diaphragm.

... which might take an hour if you work very slowly.

I'll try pulling a vacuum on the yellow line and see what happens. If it wont, do you plug the hole where the yellow line attaches, and see if car will shut off? Like I said, door locks havent worked, so disconnecting them completly wont bother me. I'll try this after the KU/Davidson BB game Im watching.

Yes plug that hole. Golf tees work great. I keep a few in all my glove compartments.

I have plenty of golf tees lying around, I'll use them, thanks for the tip! Does anybody have a picture with diagram of the "T" where the lines go, that would identify where each vacuum line goes? Curious as to where the others go.

OK, here is what I have found out, and what I have done..Brown wire going to vacuum shut off manual, pulled it off, used mighty vac to pull vacuum, and motor promptly died, so diaphram is apparantly ok, also no oil in brown line. Next looked at other lines. Three lines go into a 1-3 type splitter, 1 yellow line, 1 yellow with brown stripe, 1 black with yellow stripe(these are probably going to the door locks?) Anyway, all 3 of them have been plugged off where the exit the 1-3 rubber splitter. 2 more lines come through the firewall, 1 green and 1 brown, which T off and go into the brake booster. So, the only lines that are actually hooked up are the brown with blue stripe going to vacuum shut off, and 1 green and 1 brown going to the brake booster line. My brakes work fine, so where do I progress from here to troubleshoot the shut down problem?

Both brown lines go to the ignition switch, I think. The green I understand is for the climate control unit. Your brakes will be power as long as your vac pump works, it does.
Make sure all the splitters are not leaking, otherwise maybe the vac ignition switch.
