It sure wasn't made by the goose that laid golden eggs.

IIRC the getrag has fifth on the right and down, fourth right above it and reverse is on the far left and up or down.

The reverse is the dog leg, right?

We are speaking of the 16v right?

Something must have broken inside breaking the bell housing, hence the weld.

If its a good weld it should not be an issue.

The Getrags that I have in my 240Ds are "later" (85 & 82) and have 5th up and to the right, reverse is right and back as it should be

Oh, I thought you were talking of the getrag in the 190 16v.

I have never seen one like you speak of, actually.

I wonder if a W201's bellhousing could be modified buy cutting and rewelding the starter hump over to the correct side, if that's all that's different about these trannies?
The seller has shown that it's possible to weld one to repair it.

I seriously doubt the seller's bird droppings of a welding job would hold anything for any reasonable length of time. If I were to buy that tranny the first thing I'd do is grind that "weld" off and do it right.

Well I have a lead on a 5 speed but have yet to verify it's part number....

So far I have two part numbers which match up for 5 speeds.

717.401 00 008 329

717.400 00 050 455

We'll see how this one turns out.

The idea has been tossed around. If I ever find a 5 speed in the junk yard for cheap I am planning to try it.

It should work with a good weld. There are plenty of other bolts to hold it onto the engine.

I'm not sure if any of the bolt holes would line up. To make it work the bell housing from a transmission that will bolt up may have to be welded on. It might be easier to relocate the oil filter and just have a new engine plate made that relocates the starter to the driver's side.

I'm not sure either. Only way to find out is to take an engine plate and see if any bolt holes line up to one of those trannies.

That would be even harder, a new adapter plate would need to be made. The OM60x is cast as part of the block so it won't be coming with the tranny.
