The thing in the bottom center of the tank is a fuel tank strainer. You can remove it with the back side of a 13/16" spark plug socket on an extension like this:

You can use brake cleaner to clean it and put it back in. You should order a new o-ring gasket for when you put the strainer back in. Do a search on Biocide or Biobor, you could try that before going through with dropping the tank and having it boiled out.

Good luck.

Yes, I have a suggestion.... do a search and find what I said about cleaning it IN the car....
The holes are spaced to where you can clean it with a pressure washer in situ...
I took mine out... only figured it out after the fact....
LOL ....but you can benefit from my experience if you want to...

I dint take it down al the way,i took all four 13mm bolts off,on the wagon the one bolt by the self leveling valve is a real *****,couldnt put it back on period, way too hard, hosed it all and got quite a bit of brownish **** out and then the milky whitish stuff kept coming out,let it drain for about 2 hours then filled it with diesel and 2 bottles of thermo 8 followed by a can of Diesel Hi-Test,runs pretty good,a litle rough but before i couldnt drive 50 miles without needing another filter, hopefully that was it for a while, the in tank filter had some gunk but not much,i thought it would be pretty bad,on the pan that i used to collect the fuel from the tank i found a lot of sediment, rocks, sand or something that looked like that, who knows,in a week or so im going to change the spin on filter,i want to load it up with more crap.
Was a full day for me,im off to watch a George Carlin show, have a good one folks. and many thanks to all who helped.

Ok... with all the tank/screen cleaned out.... if you will put some correct ' killer' into the tank about once per six months you should be able to maintain for a long time before cleaning again... Biobar ? Do a search.... algae or fungicide in this forum... LOTS of info... and correct spelling....

joro,

Its not algae in fuel systems, its fungus. Algae is green fungud is like brown silicon rubber.

The only way to get rid of fungus in your fuel system is to use a fungacide. A couple treatments of Biobor will kill all the fungus.
