'87 300D Turbo - sounds like an airplane on start up
My 1987 300D Turbo (145000 Miles) has just developed a new noise on start up. It sounds like an airplane for about 30-60 seconds then the sound goes away. Any ideas?

A lot of cars with fan clutches do this. When the car is started the clutch, for some reason, is fully engaged, then it adjusts to the temperature and stops spinning. When this happens, the "woosh" sound stops. But I wonder if this is your problem since you said it is a new sound? Just an idea.

Another Idea
I know little about your engine and model, so I am just guessing. Maybe you have a small vacuum leak somewhere. It could possibly be egr related.

It is very hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it, but I've come across a starter motor not disengaging and being dragged by the engine after start up that might be described that way.
Stick your head under the hood while someone else starts your car and see if you can localize the noise and let us know. Bob D. |
