Great advice!

I'm sure there has been a thread about what to pack in the trunk for emergencies. I would have to say this bit of advice is in the top five. Somebody recently went through this on a trip (Tyler?). Thanks for the recommendation.

Same here, when I replaced my radiator I left the oil cooler where it was and didn't mess with it. I probably could have taken it off though, as my lines/cooler itself are only a few years old. I replaced them all with brand new parts a ways back. That was a painfully expensive experience.

That's exactly how I do it, much easier and safer than messing with the oil cooler. If you remove the top clamp, the bottom clamp just lifts out on the 300D.

My 307d with a 616 in a 21' motorhome did not have an oil cooler. Never a hint of any problems arising from the lack of an oil cooler.

Ok, I believe you. But I'm still not about to re-engineer mine; the cooler is cheap and available, and the engine is expensive. I'm not an engine designer, but I really doubt they added that cooler for no reason. Besides, I really hate it when someone messes with something that I've designed.

I believe on non-turbo 616's or 617's the oil cooler is correlated with the installation of AC.

How many quarts of oil did it hold?

also, I think the transmission cooler lines are quite flexible, and they are very easy to disconnect, in comparison to the oil cooler lines that are certainly NOT easy to remove... however, with the ease of separation of the cooler from the rad, I don't know why it would get damaged...

Its very fragile. Re installation warrents care too as if will wear a hole in the cooler if it is installed incorrectly.

Same as when installed in a car.

Thanks for all the comments, especially the tip on leaving the oil cooler where it is and unbolting it from the radiator.
