E300 1996 Diesel filter

Does anybody knows the part number for the diesel filter. The new one that I got from the dealer has A 601 090 1652 and it looks different comparing with the existing one on the car. Just want to make sure before I will remove it.

I don't know if the filter for the non-turbo is different than my '98 606, but the part number listed on the invoice for the filter I recently bought is 606-180-00-09. Good luck.

oops. That's a part no. for an oil filter. The part no. for the fuel filter (on my '98) is 601 090 14 52.

Here's the correct number

The part number is 601 092 01 05 "fuel filter; pre-filter at top filter housing." I bought a couple in October '07 from ******** AZ for my wife's '96 E300 Diesel.

Trust you know to also replace the pre-filter's o-ring, p/n 601 997 01 48.

I went to the dealer today and they insist that A 601 090 1652 is the correct part number. I did try to put it on but the new one has a plastic piece on top. Do I have to remove that?

You probably do have to remove the plastic piece. I bought a fuel filter from the dealer once and it had a plastic cap over the seal on the filter.
