Diesel leak at injector on 240

I went today and picked up the downpipe for the 240TD at the MB dealership. While I was there a couple of guys wanted to see it because they had only heard about 4 cyl wagons, never had seen one. When I raised the hood, I noticed that the head was wet with diesel fuel around #1 injector. This just started because it was dry a couple of days ago when I was working on the exhaust. Is there a common reason for a leak around the injector?

i'd start by replacing he braided hoses... they typically dry out and leak... if they look frayed or we at all change them... inexpensive part.

I just looked at it closer and the braided hoses look virtually new and it's dry up there. It looks like it is bubbling up at the half moon cut out in the block where the adapter for the injector is screwed in. That has 2 large flats on it like for a giant screwdriver. Should I unscrew the injector and try to tighten that adapter in the block? Is there a seal washer underneath it or is it just a tapered fit?

I replaced my return lines from info I found this forum 1 1/2 years ago when I thought for sure it was a injector. 14.00 for the return line and it is still dry. Go for the easy first. Use the M.B. Parts

They can look new, because of the braiding, mine did, when I took one off, it was split in four spots.

The half moon thing is your prechamber, that and the injector itself does not suddenly start leaking, rubber lines do.

After you replace the braided lines spray everything down with brake cleaner to get everthing dry and degreased. Get someone to start the car for you while you (carefully) watch the injector to see if it leaks and where it might be leaking. If fuel is still bubbling up from under the Pre-combustion Chamber holding ring you may have a hair line crack in the Injector Nut (the thread part that holds the spray nozzle onto the injector body).
In the pic the black part can sometimes develop a hairline crack.

We have all seen this many times, and it can fool you visually. Replace your braided line with new line on that one and have a nice day......

Got the same thing happening on mine. I tried to be super cheap and just cut a small bit off the end. Didn't work.

It's not the lines. It's DRY up there, even before I sprayed it with brake cleaner and dried that up with air. It's bubbling up around the piece that screws into the head. I've only put 200 miles on this car since I've had it and I steamed the engine when I first unloaded it off the trailer. There was gunk everywhere so I wanted to see where it was coming from. I'm sure this leak existed when I bought the car. So, if this piece is the precup chamber, should I try to tighten it?

If there is a hair line crack, tightening won't help. Sounds like you need to pull and inspect. Start with the injectors, make sure you have new heat shields when you re-install.
If you don't have a FSM cd-rom , I suggest getting them, $20 at mbusa.com
Good luck.

I would remove that injector and do a visual inspection of the injector nut, and/or take it to a local shop and have them pop test that injector. If you tell them the symptoms you are experiencing they will be careful to check it for leaks.
