Early airbags in the US are IMO dangerous. The European cars had what we then referred to as "face bags", which were designed to restrain a belted occupant, where the US market bags were designed to restrain an un-belted average-size/weight male (thanks for nothing Diane Steed head of the NHTSA).
I too chose to de-power the airbags in my wife's vehicles of that era, more danger to a small 98-lb woman slid up close to the steering wheel than possible benefit IMO.
