How do you change your oil?
Do you crawl under the car and let it drain from the oil pan or do you pump it out?
If you pump it out, which pump do you use?

During the winter I pump......the summer I drain. Draining in the summer gives you a chance to do a quick inspection from underneath the car.
On the 98 E 300 you need to remove one of the splash pans to drain so you get a chance to see just about everything. I use the Mityvac Evacuator Plus (8 ltr.)

Block 'em up and pull the plug.
Might as well for the old ones. The filter is down there as well. Gives me achance to look over the front of the car while I'm down there as well. Jim

What did you pay for the Mityvac, Fred? How many quarts does it hold?

Well, you two do raise a good point about checking things out from below. Unfortunately, I don't have a level spot in the driveway. I've also had more oil run down my arm in my lifetime than I would have liked.

I don't even lift the car up. It is high enough to just remove the plug and let it flow into the drain pan.

I get the engine up to temp, put it up on ramps and pull the plug...
Give it about 1/2 hour to drain and then refill. I am lucky with the house in NY in that the driveway has a sloped part that levels off. I can get the car level even on ramps! (of course I chock the rear wheels) I like getting under the car to see how things are going.

I kinda like the idea of pumping it out into a container that I guess you could just transport it to a gas station to get rid of. Then you have the option of crawling underneath or not.

I use a Mityvac 7201 Fluid Extractor. It works great, but only with very warm oil. Otherwise you'll be waiting 2 hours for it to pump out.
http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7201-Fluid-Evacuator-Plus/dp/B0002SR7TC/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1207583861&sr=8-2 You can pump the oil back into the containers the new oil came out of and take it to the recycle center.

Great. Thanks a lot. It sounds like the Mityvac is the way to go. It looks similar to the one I saw that SnapOn sells. That one hooks up to an air compressor.

Those don't need you to pump to draw the oil out. The Mityvac will make you break a sweat if the oil is cold.

So, it's not too bad if the oil is warm?

Benefits of working at a dealer.. We have suction pumps. Warm it up, insert tube down the dipstick tube, smoke a cig, change the filter, refill and I'm off.

240 Joe's ban is permanent, right?
Car masterbation? I don't do it myself just because of the disposal part. I do always check that the level is right and the cap is on, though.
