For this reason... if you're concerned about flushing it out... you can run it for 2500 miles on dino, drain that out at 2500, run for another 2500 on "clean" oil, drain again, and THEN go to a 5,000 interval if it makes you feel better... You can go through two or three dino oil changes for the price of one synthetic, which makes it a cheaper (although not cheap) way to flush out like that. Either way, I wouldn't worry about flushing in any context more than just putting in clean oil and running it like that for a while. No need to scrape the walls clean. |

The guy who is giving this car to me helped me start it. It was super low on gas and he just filled in a few gallons of kerosene. Is he crazy? Is that acceptable. Should I just go to the gas station and put diesel on top of it? Is there any product I could put in the tank that would help clean the old fuel out? It gets down to about 18 degrees at the worst here but usually it stays around 40 in the winter. I'm guessing some of the old diesel has probably started to coagulate...

What do you mean by "clean oil". Just new oil or something different from the dino? Thanks for your help...

The biggest problem would be if the in-tank fuel strainer was clogged. Changing that is a bit of a pain. Not terrible. Kerosene is harmless for the time being, over time it would potentially damage things by not having enough lubricity... but it's certainly okay for now. No need to drain it out, just put a full tank of diesel in on top of it and run like that, on clean filters, and check the filters (visually, on the little clear primary filter) to see if lots of gunk is coming through. |

Just meant new oil as opposed to draining out the 2500 mile oil and pouring it right back into the crankcase (That's why my original post made it sound like at first)

Sweet. Thanks. I'm gonna take her out for a little spin. Hopefully it doesn't blow up. But more importantly, I hope I don't get pulled over with no plate....

Usually on older indirect engines like yours the oil is black. When you change it out it too will become black before you have driven it ten miles. The object here is never change oil by color. Instead by milage only. The accumulated soot from not changing it at the correct intervals can be a large wear factor.

Oh and all the lights on the outside seem to work great but on the inside...different story. The lights at the automatic gear shifter sort of out a very dim light uhhhh...after I jigggle this and that. The gauges are totally in the dark. Nothing is worse than electrical issues in a car until an engine or transmission goes....Driver window goes down slowly but the others are stubborn....

Glad you got it started and you could ask your landlord what he remembers about the car when he drove it. Especially why he stopped driving it. Hopefully it was just an extra car in his life and no real reason for it. |

Sorry for all the questions....I'm jump starting it right now because the ignition switch must be shot. I have to have the key in it but I'm just touching wires to get it going. What should I but to fix it?

Barry...He stopped driving it because he couldn't get the title after he had bought it some years ago. I've checked it in with the dmv and I can get a lavage title if I want to drive it. And I do! But the title will cost me 300-350 so I want to get a good feel for it's potential before I do that...

No idea without further analysis of the problem. Could be ignition switch, could be contacts anywhere between the switch and the starter, could be the starter solenoid (unlikely).... at any rate, it's midnight here and I'm going to sleep for the night. Good luck with it all, make your list, do some reading, keep asking... I'm sure it'll all come together eventually.
Don't expect everything to be fixed overnight. |
