IP diagram or blowup? Leaking pump
Went out today to do some work on the car, and noticed the motor mount was wet. Started the motor, and find a leak, every 3 seconds, from the IP behind the fuel warmer. That's the lowest point on the IP, so it will drip from there. I can't see where it's coming from--anyone know if these pumps are known to leak from a certain area down there? There is so much stuff in the way, I can't see a damn thing. If anyone knows what to look at, or has a blowup of the IP, let me know please. The motor is a 602. thanks

same here...
I'm having almost the exact same problem on my 602... diesel leak from the rear of the IP, though I can't see exactly where it's coming from. It's not delivery valve seals, nor is it injector return lines or the feed and return lines to the tank. I figure it must be a seal or gasket on the IP, does anyone have any info?
thanks, dave

spray the IP clean with a can of carb or brake cleaner, then start it and look for the leak with a flashlight and mirror if/as needed.
Almost always is comming from in front AND above where you think it is leaking from.

Most litkely just delivery valve o-rings.

in my case, I know it's not the delivery valves... I did them a couple months back, and the top of the IP is dry as a bone. this new leak sprung up rather quickly, and it's definitely coming from either the back of the IP or the bottom of it... I can see between it and the engine and up by the shutoff valve, and those areas are completely clean and dry (I cleaned the whole thing really well when I did the delivery valve o-rings). as near as I can tell it's got to be coming from the lower rear of the IP, where I can't really see, much as the first poster described on his car.
thanks for any ideas or advice, dave

When mine developed a leak from the lower part, I just replaced it with a reman unit. Mine had 300K miles and I decided it wasn't worth messing with.

Unless MB moved things around, the fuel heater is by the oil filter and goes into the cylinder head. The fuel thermostat is separate from the IP, usually sitting on the engine mount arm. I don't understand how the leak can come from the fuel heater that is part of the IP since no part of the fuel heater is on or forward of the IP.
I'd say look at the fitting on the inboard side of the IP. There's a plastic line that runs from that fitting to the return fitting on the fuel filter block. Check also the injector lines that run along the underside of the intake manifold plenum. Maybe a failed clip allowed a line to chafe through to a leak. Sixto 87 300D |

478 and 481 are oil seals.

Like Sixto mentioned, look on the inboard side at clear line and banjo bolt. Its a check valve.

thanks everyone... It wasn't the inboard plastic hose, but sixto got me thinking about the fuel thermostat. It wasn't obviously leaking, but I figured maybe it was running along the bottom of it before dripping down. I bypassed the thermostat to check, and sure enough the leak went away. I guess I just need to replace the o-ring in there. Thanks for the help...
