Air Cleaner Part Question
On the metal cover of the air filter of my 81 240D there is a hole. I have seen a few pictures like the one below with some plastic line coming off the top of the cover, mine doesn't have one. Should I have one? What is it? Part#?
Thanks, |

I think that goes to the vac pump, I would also think you need it. Have you had the car long?

isnt the line supposed to go to the top of the valve cover blowby valve?

Agree, that's correct for a 240. On a 300 there would be a breather tube to the valve cover.

Do you know what the part # is? I just started driving it everyday now, it was gifted to my mom about a year ago and given to me. |

I used to have an '81 240D w/ manual trans and the breather went from the valve cover to the intake manifold. It didnt have a hole on the cover. I'm betting that a previous owner swapped an air cleaner cover from a turbo model. I would plug the hole if you already have the breather tube going from the valve cover to the intake.

That's the vent line for the early vacuum pumps. It's found on both 616 and 617 engines with the early versions of the pump. Perhaps you have had a later model vacuum pump installed.

I think '80 was the last year of the vent tube from the vac pump to the air cleaner cover. Both my 80's had the vent tube to the air cleaner.
The engine in China now came from an '81 and doesn't have the vent tube. All 3 have the line from the valve cover to the manifold under the air cleaner....

Your right. I took a look at the vac pump and there is no connections missing. And I looked at the air cleaner cover and it is closed off. The top of the rubber plug is missing of it. |
