Too bad there no Town Fairs on the west coast. For $100 here, all you can get mounted and balanced are used tires.

Tried Pirellis

I tried a set of Pirellis on my 81 300SD; believe they were P7's. It was a gorgeous tire but I was absolutely unable to get them balanced. Went back to Michelins and stayed there. Pretty much soured me on Pirellis. NTW said the Pirellis were made in Argentina and they had a lot of trouble with them.

I'm sure they balanced up just fine.

The problem is the fact that they were not round.

Tires aren't actually round when they are mounted on your wheels and sitting on the ground, are they? I mean, they have the flat area which meets the pavement so it's not like a perfectly round tire (not that there is such a thing) remains perfectly round when it is turning on your car.

In my experience the problems I have had with tires is when they suffer from a shifted belt and aren't true, meaning they wobble.

They should be perfectly round when mounted on the wheels. Runout of .06" is acceptable but hard to achieve.

The flat spot on the bottom of the tires isn't relevant to the balance or the roundness of the tire. That spot is not moving.

Here's a couple of shots of the 240D with its new white walls. Took it up to 70 MPH today and it was smooooooth as silk. Those new tires did the trick!
