I recall that the procedure on some other cars I have done is to install mounts, but leave the bolts loose. run engine A few minutes to allow the mounts to center up, then do final torque down. may not apply to mbz, but it could help if you have alignment issues. i dont recommend driving w/ the mounts loose.

I just let the weight of the motor down all the way on the mounts to center the arms in them and then raised it slightly to put the lower mount bolts in. I had the two top mount bolts tightened already.

I am done ranting.... its time to drink beer...

Hey if a PO messed it up it is not the car's fault. It should have been an easy fix.

Sorry it took so long for you.
For me it was a 45 minute job

I know this may sound retarded but now that I put in a new set of motor mounts, how long can I go without replacing the two engine shocks. I know theyre shot to hell but I cant afford to replace those right now.. Will it be ok for a few weeks or will my mounts start to wear prematurely??

I'm in the same boat as you, project. It was an all around pain as I live in Inglewood, CA thus have no access to a garage. They didn't do a very good job levelling out the street when it was last paved. We had to loosen the passenger side mount from the frame and wiggle it a little until we could get the bolt from underneath to catch. Then we lowered the engine and tightned the heck out of everything. When I started it up it was idling WORSE than before because the driver's side shock wasn't lined up right. I drove it 8 miles this morning and it settled in and now is better than ever. I will replace the shocks in a week or so, though.
