I have owned/driven MB's for so long I don't even pay attention anymore. But since the SDL needs paint I like to think I'm currantly cruising under the radar.

For some reason my dads friends seem to always get a kick out of it, I always get comments down the shop or when I see them on jobsites. I like to think I provide good entertainment, I need to buy a newer one I think they are betting bored of this one.

Couldn't agree more. Restrained understatement is the buzzworld for all MB owners. If you want gaudy flash buy a Lexus and throw a ton of Gold crap on it.

Want to buy my car notes.....

My youngest daughter refers to the notes left under the wiper as "love notes".

My best collector for these is the 68 MGB roadster.

Some folks have ribbed me about owning MB's... as if I were rich. I say, "yeah I'm rich- my newest car is 24 years old and I bought it for less than $3000. How much did your car cost?"

Love this thread.

I live in a small-ish Indiana college town, traditionally a town of hippies, musicians, drop-outs (that's me), and factory workers. Over the last decade or so, the "old money" folks from the east coast seem to have figured out that IU is a great school to attend for your music degree or your MBA (the NYT compared our music school favorably to Juliard a few years back, I think that started it) and I've seen more students with "money" ever since (but that's beside the point).

It's a town where folks tend to dig Euro-cars; I'd wager that we have more Volvo 240s per-capita than any other US city.

I work in tech support for a department at the University, a job I started two months ago.

Recently, I was walking through the parking lot with my new boss and a contractor who was doing some work for us.

Contractor: "Geez, is that the Dean's car?"

Boss (who drives a new Yukon Denali): "Nah, the Dean drives a Subaru. Somebody's getting overpaid."

Me: "That's mine. She turned twenty this year, and just hit 230k. Best $2,800 I ever spent."

Once they realized she was just a cool old car and not a rich man's status symbol, they warmed up and smiled at the shape she was in.

I find that's the case with a lot of people. The cleaning crew at my office saw her a couple of weeks ago, and I had much the same conversation with them. I always try to slip in that I gave a very small amount of money for her, that seems to really make people feel better about the whole thing.

My cousin asked my wife what we paid for the Benz when we got together at Easter (not because he's nosy- he buys wrecked "auction" cars, fixes them up, and sells them at a profit; he's just interested). They talked for several minutes before we figured out that he thought she meant $28,000, not $2,800.

Oh I should have! I never thought of that! The comments I heard wer.nt necessarily making the others think I'm rich, but that I have class. There is the conception that these cars are reasonable to buy, but expensive to own and maintain. I guess if you took it to the dealer, they'd be right. It would cost me $300 just to have Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale even just look at it!

irish flu, funny thing you mentioned the mix up of 28,000 vs 2,800, i unkowingly caused a conflict with my boss, he has a 1987 560 sl coupe with 58k on it, he told me he paid 23 and i said **** thats a mad steal!! then i realized with his eyebrows up that he was insinuating he was made of money... lol this morning i was trying to tease him tellin him he ought to sell it and get one for a quarter of the price, boy did that push his buttons! nothing like being called an idiot by your own deli clerk hahaha

how much is the 87 560 sl coupe worth anyways

later, i lied to him and told him i talked to my former desk manager at the ford dealership i worked for, saying that the trade in value was 17,5 and that by rule of thumb you should add another 5,6,7 thousand dollars on top hahahah

ugh ... deli... drama...

$23K? Sure for a super mint R107, thats got to be at the top of the market though.

Grandpa paid a good deal more for his 560 in 1987, bargin considering how much car your getting.

Really cherry R107's and C126's still fetch a lot of money.

It would appear that W123's can too! I've had people walk up to me and ask if I'm willing to sell my car!

If someone offers you $23k for your W123 you should take the check and run.
