trying to insert clip in steering column behind combo switch 1985 300sd
I replaced the plastic cam on the steering shaft inside the column which strikes the turn signal switch when it clicks off the blinkers. It is a molded plastic circle with a small split in it which is held in place via a steel retaining ring that clamps around a tight groove cut into the steering shaft.
I cannot seem to find a way to get this ring to seat into the groove completely. Pushing on the plastic does not seem to get it deep enough down the steering shaft to allow the ring to seat in the groove. I've been trying to work the clip in around the shaft using a short flat blade screwdriver but it's very tight. (you can see the plastic is slightly marred from trying this) Is there a trick to this? Has somebody else been down this road? Any ideas?

I have never done this before, But maybe the shaft is sitting too low and if you could pull the shaft up a little, then the ring would clip in? I would guess it is a tight fit.

Thanks for the reply. I should have indicated that the steering shaft does not move when pushed or pulled in the lateral direction.
