I use valvoline SynPower power steering fluid....I'm sure the system will run fine with anything, but I prefer the good stuff.

The formula for Dexron III is different from the original ATF that M/B intended 20 years ago. It manages to swell all the seals in the pump and will definitely cause leaks.

It's been recommended on the forum to switch to traditional power steering fluid..........in direct contrast to the FSM...........to prevent this seal failure.

I can tell you from experience that Dexron III will absolutely cause multiple leaks in the pump...........and I'll never use it again if given the option to change it.

See how it does for you.

I tends to soften the seals over time.

Great info; for the sake of clarity and a complete thread: Besides DEX and MERC what about type F and FA?

Where is the PS filter available for sale? -Other than Fastlane- Could not find at local generic-mobile outfitter.

Considering that you own two oil change centers, it is interesting that you need to go to yahoo for basic information on automotive fluids.

^^ these were quotes that I pasted from yahoo.. I am total diesel newbie, and make no claims to such lofty achievements. Please excuse my misuse (but never my mspleling) of the term 'G-05'. I thought it was similar to an API rating.

Where can I find this coolant also? I am not having much luck at general automotive stores.

The MB label and Febi PS fluid I've seen is yellow. It's not red (can't be red if it's yellow ) and doesn't smell like Dexron III. Maybe pre-1985 it was Dex II spec fluid.

I have the MB/FEBI Bilstein fluid, and its red, and smells horrid. MB part number 000 989 88 03 and mb 236.3.

The bottle says to be used for:
MB 236.3
Dexron II
Voith 55.6335
ZF - TE-ML 09, 11, 14A, 03D, 04D, 17C.

But this is for my 84

Is it possible that the Valvoline Synthetic P/S fluid I have been using the past 2.5 years in my system caused it to start leaking? Over the past 7-8 months I lose about a reservoir's worth of fluid over the span of about 800-1000 miles....and its wet around the pump (in the inner fender area and such...) but the pump itself isn't really visibly leaking anything....so I don't understand it....but that fluid must be going somewhere.

The bottle of the stuff says "contains conditioners and stop leak formula, "helps stop and prevent leaks" It did make my steering smoother and quieter, especially in the winter....but now it leaks. Of course it could just be a coincidence, the pump does have 270k on it, maybe it just started leaking.

Is it hard to re-seal it? It works fine, aside from using 2qts of fluid per year.

I found over several MBs that most of the fluid loss in an old system is through tired return hoses.
