I agree, but the numbers (HP/torque) and expected fuel mileage really dwarf the old om 616. But still, I can't help but smile every time I pop the hood on my 240D.

Sweet? Its a two steps back from thier previous generation engines. Its got far too much junk hanging off of it and it uses two turbos instead of a VNT.

Single row timing chain?
Lets hope Mercedes has gotten better with the single row timing chain since the 380 motor

Couldn't be any worse than the York compressor mount.

Yeah, that thing looks WAY too complex....there's no way it could be as long lasting/durable as a 616 with all that stuff on it. Look at all the little gears that run the timing chain and such. Wshew. Then again with modern engineering tolerances/precision and testing it may prove just as long lived as our old motors....you never know.

Repairing it does look just a bit daunting though. But for the dealer tech, it means job security!

Finally mercedes changed to gears. one question i have: why are they still driving the stupid cams by a chain?.. drive it by gears.. I like the idea of twin stage turboing. but it does seem abit complex to be relable. allthough i do love the idea of CDI and DOHC on this 4 cylinder. combined with turbo charging.. your looking at as much power as the 603

I agree. They were just two gears away from being chainless.
