The turbo on my 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbo Diesel seems to need replacement. The impeller blades are rubbing the housing. Since I have to replace it I would like to upgrade it.

Can I use a Holset WH1E/HX40 Turbocharger?


What is required aside from the turbo? Any internal work needed? I don't want to modify the engine and put in a lot of work, just a little more power.

Is there a bolt-on mod that I can use from another engine?

No, its WAY too big for the engine. Drivability would be horrible. If you want a Holset turbo but not extreme power, the biggest to look for would be an HX30.

No, only the stock T3 and K26 turbos used with the OM617 are bolt on. Every other turbo will require exhaust and intake modifications to work.
