Do not discount the mechanical fan yet. The fan doesn't "stop turning" when the clutch fails. It does in fact turn, but not at full velocity when that velocity is required.
Not sure if a 300 even HAS a fan clutch, to be honest. If it does, it is highly suspect. When mine went out, that was my precise symptom. Stop moving on a hot day, temp climbs toward redline. When you get the air moving again, it stops climbing. Spin the fan with the engine hot but not running. If it freely spins, the clutch is bad. If it feels stiff and tight, and stops after a turn or two, the clutch is good. EDIT - just fixed my mistake, this thread is about a 300, not a 240. |

Thats proof that they stock a generic part. Show us a picture of that part on a 1983 300D.

Many of these parts houses list parts for gasoline engines that are not on the diesels. Their database is far from perfect. The '83 doesn't have that switch on the diesel. |

BTW, mine does work even when the A/C isnt on, but mine is a '91 w124. but you were wrong anyway FI, cuz you said only the w116 has the switch.

My 300TD exibits this same behavior when the coolant is a little low. Temp creeps up at stoplight, back down when moving. Top off the coolant and it is back to normal.

It's possible that the thermostat is also bad, and stuck open. But that would also mean that at highway speeds the temp would rise.
While you guys are debating on the thermoswitch, can you tell me what the switch on the thermostat housing is for?

My two cents
First of all the guy's problem sounds like an underfilled radiator. Top tje system off and do a search on 'burping' the system. Make sure that there are no leaks. If that doesn't help, I would search on 'citric acid flush' there are step by step instructions on how to do this.
For what it is worth, both 617s I have had (one from a 1981 SD and one from a 1983 300D) had the sensor on the T-stat housing to turn on the electric fan. I know this is the case because one failed and ran the fan all the time. If I pulled the wire, the fan stopped. They work by providing ground for the fan.

I've seen a diesel engine before, and I my knowlege extends far beyond gas engines.
Don't be mad because you really dont know it all, like you think you do.

Could be the radiator and/or electric fans.
My car needed a radiator and electric fans. It never went into the red, but the temp would go up on idle (fans) and when climbing hills when it was hot outside (radiator). The fan clutch was OK. Now I think I hear a squeak in the water pump, grrr.
It is about time to change the radiator on these older vehicles anyway. Be sure to use ZEREX G-05 antifreeze or you will screw up your cooling system.

I just used that as one source, I didn't say that it was 100% correct, did I? I am using the fact that other people have siad they have the 100C switch for the fan.
Can someone please post a pic of the t-stat housing on a 300D, so I can prove to him that W123 diesels have a aux switch? Just admit it, you know I'm right!!!
