For my 240D 1977:
For the first engine I used Conventional Castrol 30wt, that engine lated about 300K miles.
For the second engine bought from a dealer I am using Chevron Delo 15/40 C rated and change it at about 2000/2500 miles.

WOW.. Isn't the recommended switch 7500 miles and 5000 for severe duty?

One reason for changing oil/filter @ 2000/2500 miles is that I do not drive the car much these days, I am only 5 miles from work so the engine barely gets warm and thanks to $4 per gallon of diesel and still going up I will be driving a lot less.

I don't feel like going to the car and getting my owner's manual out right now, but I think the "book" interval for oil changes on the 616 and 617 is 4000 miles.

Not sure about the later models, the 1976 240d/300d states 3,000 miles for an oil change, and a transmission fluid change every 25,000.

The 1986 300SDL book I have states 5,000.

The car in this thread is halfway between a 76 and an 86... so yeah, 4000 would be right.

to OP. 10w30 is almost certainly not rated for diesel use. ON a fresh engine I might use a synthetic diesel rated such as rotella. On an older engine I probably would stick with a rotella 15w40 non synthetic. I would change it at 3 to 5000 mile intervals depending on driving conditions.

I have always used Rotella Synthetic 5W40. Had it in my 300SD for 100,000 miles and the engine was nice and clean inside.

I just swapped the SDL over from whatever the PO had to Rotella Syn and the oil leaks stopped within two weeks. Before he used to mark his territory wherever he was parked...

I follow the following schedule

Oil change every 3000 miles.
Oil filter change every 1500 miles.

I know it is a schdule that borders on the obsessive, but it makes ME feel better and the engine was spotless inside.

Doing the filter takes less than five minutes and the entire oil/filter change takes 1/2 hour.

Is your Mity Vac a hand pump type? I have seen the ones you connect to a compressor, but was thinking of getting one that had the hand pump and wondered how hard it was to pump it by hand.

I recently saw Castrol 15W40 on sale for seven something a gallon. Do you buy yours in the gallon jugs? How much do you pay per gallon?

Older Mercedes with-out particulate traps I'd recommend CI-4 Plus oil. Castrol Tection is about 10.80 a Gallon. Its CJ-4 oil.

What does that mean, CI-4 and CJ-4?

is CI-4 available?

The letter "J" means it is a newer oil, or oil spec, than "I". As someone said elsewhere on this thread, the J has lower Zinc, one of the antiwear additives.

Because I own a Dodge Cummins, I monitor their conversations, and there's a big concern with the older engines on the oil issue. All oils are to be backwards compatible, but the J is pushing the limit as to if it should be considered a sub. for the I. Soon, you will not be able to purchase an I oil, and J will be all that is available.

Because of the change, Delo 400 CI-4 went from the top of list to buy, to near bottom for Delo 400 CJ-4.

BTW, this change was done for the "traps" on the new diesels in pickups, as the zinc and "high ash" additives will foul them.

There are additives in the J oils to replace the zinc, and phosphorus, but those don't last as long. Bottom line: change your oil and filter as per M-B schedule. This will be very important with a J oil.

Ron
