I'm not sure what it is called, but it's the thick mat that is attatched to under the hood to keep the heat from damaging the hood.

What is that called? And where can I get a new one?

I think you can get them through fastlane

Those are usually called Hood pads. You can get then at fastlane or bmaparts dot com as well. They sell some with or without heat guards for turbo engines so make sure that you get this extra protection if you have a turbo.

So which hood pad is best? I am thinking it would be which ever is the thickest/quietest... well it would have to last too....

I bought a car with a new Mercedes Benz pad folded in the trunk. Should I put it on or get a 'better' thicker one? Or maybe sell it to someone who wants 'the stock part' and I buy a 'better one?

The one with the heat shield seems to me to be a better pad, material wise, than the one without. (Which is not to say that the heat shield itself is all that worthwhile.) It is certainly better that the original pad that was installed in my car ('82 300D.)

Yep... I just finished putting one of the Heat Shield ones on the other weekend. Easy really... and really dresses that engine bay up...

Use that 3M heavy duty trim adhesive (says right on the can that one of its uses is for Hood Pads and costs about $17, you need just one can)

Putting the new pad on is easy. Getting the old one off is an entirely different matter.

Not if its like my old one... which consisted of the foil and a few spots of Dust.

It does require a good scraping, scuff padding and a couple washes with solvent though.

I have a replacement hood pad for my 240D, that I'm going to be putting on, one of these days if I ever get a chance! Would like to scrap off more of the old glue and prep it a little better, etc.

My old one had a foil square over the air filter. My new one does not.

I saved the foil, should I bother to cut a piece in the new one and reuse the foil? It was glued to the hood, and the (original) hood had a square hole. It was like the square was cut, wrapped in the foil, then glued separately.

If there is no real purpose in the foil, it would be easier to just put on the new hood pad in one piece.

The pad is just for noise insulation.
