Did I hear correctly...Camry Hybrid
 

I think I heard on the radio while listening to a news report about someone that rented a Camry Hybrid getting 900 miles on two tank fulls? That's not that great. I'll get 1200+ on two tank fulls. Although I don't know how many gallons a car like that holds. I'll look it up now...18.5gallons!

Camry hybrid's fuel tank is 17.2 gallons.

So 900 / 34.4 gallons is only about 26.5 mpg....thats nothing great at all. I get nearly that with a 26 year old 2-ton diesel. :D (I average about 24.5 or so)

Using the mileage in your sig you'd get 1350 miles on two 21.1 gal tankfuls in the E300.....;)

I doubt they used every last drop of fuel so I imagine actual mpg was more like 29 mpg. That's not bad if they racked up 900 miles crawling around the city. I'm unimpressed if that was a highway run because my 99 Camry got 29 mpg or better on the highway without being a hybrid.

Were they impressed with 900 miles or were they expecting more?

Who cares how many miles you get per tank? I feel that's used too often as a marketing trick. Whether that number is good obviously depends on how big the tank is. Having said that both of my cars get near 600 miles on 1 tank if I go near empty, but the E300's tank is a lot bigger.

As far as hybrids go, highway mileage is about the same as diesels of the same size, but diesels will give you better torque while going up hills. Hybrids do better in stop and go traffic.

I have never been in a Camry hybrid, but that Lexus 400H SUV hybrid is pretty damn cool. Fast, and it gets like 28mpg average. Its an ugly egg and cheap as heck, but still pretty cool. Sounds like a golf cart when you take off without the motor.

I think more of the current hype about hybrids is not about the efficiency anymore but more about the "lower" emissions.

I think they are more about people wanting to look good. Its hip to look like you care.

The problem with hybrids is all the pollution and energy used to create them, and dispose of them, offsets any savings the vehicle may accomplish.

That is quite a blanket statement. Was that on the internet or did you read it in a bathroom stall somewhere?

I agree. I can get around 700 miles on one tank in the Suburban (the most range of any of my vehicles) but the tank is almost 47 gallons... so I am only getting maybe 14mpg!

Well, there's definitely extra pollution involved in creating those batteries and the recycling probably produces some pollution or waste as well, but I agree it's hard to say how much that pollution offsets anything. One thing is clear, cars have been getting cleaner (as far as exhaust goes) for decades, both gas and diesel. Even my "filthy" 2004 TDI is only as filthy as a 2001 Camry on the EPA air pollution scale, and that scale is heavily biased toward gas engine emissions.

Sounds like a good thing to me...

There are some obvious outliers but it looks like there is enough data to offset these (any statisticians out there??).
