Weirdest MB on the road?

http://kansascity.craigslist.org/car/642828574.html

I don't know if this is for real or some overseas person trying to rip someone off on Craigslist. Regardless, check this thing out!! It's got a 616 4 cylinder. I bet it flies!!!

Cool. All sorts of possibilities with something like that.

That's someone in Europe who is constantly posting those ads on various Craigslist sites around the country. He also sells on Ebay. He's asking a LOT of money for those vehicles compared to what they sell for in Europe to non-US suckers. If a person really wanted one of those vehicles it would be much cheaper to buy on www.mobile.de or other similar sites in a European country.

Why is this a possible scam? There were about 540.000 T2's built between 1967 and 1986.
Some of them indeed did have a OM616.

Because that same listing (description + photos) has been posted in at least 3 other cities over the past 6 months or so....

I've seen the seller's site and in the various listings of US spec models they mention the vehicles are located in Northern Germany when it's quite obvious from the photos that the vehicles are in the US, most likely CA. Those cars are wearing CA plates!
The 407's OTH could be in Germany.

Narcoleptic 04-15-2008 10:48 AM

I've seen that ad on the Dallas craigslist, too.

There was one similar vehicle just recently for sale from the port authority in SC. It was real. Not sure what motor it had in it though. I don't recall. But it was a Diesel motor.

It's NOT a scam if,

it has been cleared by customs, DOT and EPA. These are for sale all over Europe in surplus sales (there) but there is a lot of work to convert them to US specs.
