Aren't the boosters different? I'm by no means an expert but when my VW friends have done brake upgrades, they usually involved a booster change...

I don't know about other calipers, but the stock w123 booster is fine for 1st gen w126 calipers.

I am glad I decided to get two 3/8" drifts for the old race removal. Each hub destroyed all the clean edges on one drift. I imagine one 1/2" drift might give enough edge for all four races if you plan carefully.
I had the same problem with my drift. the race is hardened steel and the drift is softer metal and chip easy. had to use the grinder a few times.

Thanks for the good write up this is something else for me to do, can`t let you big guys get ahead of me .

Thanks Charlie ... I'll try grinding the drift next time. I have a bench grinder, but figured it would make the drift even softer or brittle.

nice- I wish I had known about the simple bolt on upgrade last fall when I did calipers and rotors. but I havent had issues yet. next time around, maybe.

and dont worry about caliper paint- if (when, in your case )you actually drive your car, they will be black in no time......

The drift-I would cut it w/ a hacksaw. or I would actually use my portable bandsaw. faster than a hacksaw

Is that a can of aero-kroil?

Where did you buy that stuff?
I found a can one time and it works great. I like it better than PB Blaster or any of the others. It's almost gone and I'd like to re-stock.
Thanks!

Yes it's a can of AeroKroil. I was recently introduced to it and will never go back. It works in a fraction of the time it takes for liquid wrench or PB Blaster.

You can get it on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Kano-Aerokroil-Penetrating-Oil-aerosol/dp/B000F09CEA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1208300501&sr=8-1

If you are a business, you can purchase direct from kanolabs.com and get two 16.5 ounce cans for $16.00.

I used my hand held 4inch grinder, It`s my Harbor Freight super duper $18.00 grinder . I just layed it on my work bench and put a new edge on the punch. not sure if it changed the softness any, but still chiped some.
I was more focused on getting the race out than whether I was degrading the drift. They don`t cost that much anyway. and quicker than a hack saw.
A chop saw would work too, but then I would have to spend $50.00 at HF to chop my $3.00 drift .

the second generation Rotors are larger? then what, go to 15 or 16 inch wheels?
Iam still stuck in a 14 inch time warp.

I wasn't concerned about saving the drift either. I meant I thought it would make the drift too soft or brittle to have an edge that would knock out the race. Since it worked for you, I'll use the grinder next time.

Yup, the second generation calipers and rotors are larger. I wanted to keep using my 14" bundts for snow tires. You need to go at least 15" for 2nd gen w126 brakes.

Chad, what year are the 1st generation 126's? And can you give a rundown on your sources of parts?

Rotors?
Calipers (Advance/Autozone)
Hoses?

I guess the 126 rotors fit the 123 hubs just fine, ey?

The only ones I'm sure are 1st gen. w126s are 1981 to 1985 300SDs.

As you already know I got the reman ATE calipers direct from Cardone (A1 Cardone line) who supplies Advance and Autozone. I have family that works there, so I always get anything that can be reman from them (employee discount, woo hoo!).

The rotors, sensors, hoses, pads, and anti-squeal paste I got from Phil at Fastlane.

The w126 rotors fit the w123 hubs perfectly.

all W126 81-85 are first gen. Second gens are perfect fit as well but you need 15" wheels (and a 15" spare, nothing like getting a front flat in the rain and a spare that wont fit on it).

While we're at it, you can grind some kitty litter into the concrete floor with you foot and get out the majority of those oil stains. Just don't use the self clumping kind.

Just broke my rotor free of the hat on the right front (left front had done this already previously...so I think I'm going to do a 2nd gen conversion...
