alternator moves on 220D...is that normal?
 

I have a 1973 220d and the alternator moves when you excelerate. Is this normal? If you push on it it moves a little also. Is it set up to do that? It dosn't look like the brackets are broken.

No, it shouldn't move. You have loose/broken bolts or a worn out bracket.

Loose and broken bolts. :confused:

Try and tighten all the bracket bolts.

Take a look at the alternator bracket bushing...

so the 2 17mm bolts that attach the bracket to the block wont budge but the rubber washers or whatever they are look shot. The long bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket tightened a bit but alternator still moves. the long adjusting bolt looks like it is setup to move a bit where it is bolted to engine.

Change the rubber-metal bushings...if not changed,the long bolt and the short one that is screwed in the block will start to wear excessively...
payed over 80$ for 4 bushings(couldn`t find them aftermaket),long and short bolt....n-r 75 and 81
check also the alternator support bolt holes for wear(bored and sleeved mine)...

so there are 2 on each bolt? Was your alternator moving too?
Do I just loosen the adjustment bolt and take out the 2 bolts on the bracket to the engine block or do I have to take the long bolt out too?

I removed the generator,then loosened the 2 nuts and removed the bracket...of course,one of the studs was shot,had to replace it...yes,4 bushings all(one on each side of the bracket hole)flat sections of the bushing pointing to the block and nut respectively...can`t do it wrong...yes,it was literally bouncing(hence the eaten bolts)....
One doesn`t need to remove the adj.(long) bolt from the block,but I had to replace it anyways

The bottom pivot bolt may be worn too.

I have a 1970 220D and yes mine bounces around some. At first I thought there was something wrong. I called my dad who had the car over 20 years he said it has always been like that. it sure does look like something is loose while running.

I replaced the bushings and checked everything for wear (seemed fine). Now my alternator sits still like it should. Thanks to all that helped me get my ambulance right again!!!!!!!

I had the same problem as you. There are four rubber/metal bushings (two between the engine and the mount, and another two between the mount and the nuts).

I actually bodged together new bushings. I stripped what was left of the old rubber from the metal portion of the old bushings, then used the rubber from some other bushings I had as a replacement. Everything's bolted back together and it doesn't move an inch.
