Slowly pullng the head off my 95 for a redo, and something quizzical..

Balancer timing is at TDC, by the yellow hash mark through the sight window, nicely degreed balancer btw! Yet the cams are **NOT** yet lined up on the timing marks, they're coming up on them next tooth.

An anomaly or OK? I expected to see the two "dot to dot" at TDC.

Anyway, lashed the chain down to the main pulley to hold timing, even though I should replace the chain.

I don't remember using a sight window Gene - is there a pointer a little further to the right of the "window".

Sounds like timing chain stretch, no? Line up the dots on the cams, then read the balancer. Past 4° and a new chain is required.

Ok, the "large aprature peep sight" is not the timing tab, adn the tiny, hard to see, little tab at 12:00 is, then we're good to go!


Numbers Cruncher, next step is to simply unbolt the cam saddles yes? Even;ly as the springs are still pushing on the cam shaft, yes? Evenrything is at TDC, and the chain is zip tied to the cam sprocket,.

And away we go.

Have you taken the chain tensioner out?, and taken the chainwheel off the exhaust cam?

Mmm, go steady Gene! These cams are a bit delicate, and, as there's still valve spring pressure on them, it's very easy to snap them [[]] if you're a bit too bold undoing (and re-installing for that matter!) the cam bearings.

There's some guidance in the FSM about which order to release them - which is probably the best advice to follow. However, when I did mine, I just went very slowly 1/8 of a turn a time, keeping sure that the load was evenly distributed, i.e., if a bolt felt loose, I didn't slacken it any more until it began to take some load again.

Thak you Sir. No the exhuast manifold adn tensioner are the next steps, then cams, the the famous 10mm ZXN tool comes from Baum tool.

Don't forget the two bolts down in the timing chain "abyss"**, and also, the two pins for the chain guide which have to be pulled out too.

** an area which I would recommend that you stuff with rag - any bolts dropped down there mean a lot of work to recover!
