'91 350SDL Original Power Output
Does anybody know the specs on this engine? Was the trap-ox equipped in '91?

It's the 603.970 engine and it had 134 hp. Rpm at peak horsepower was fairly low.........something like 4400 rpm.
I don't believe it had a trap-ox in '91 but I'm not certain. |

134 hp at 4,000 rpm...
229 lb/ft at 2,000 rpm... Top speed 108 mph...But I've gone faster ~ 115 mph and SLOWLY climbing... Maximum engine speed, full load, ~4,400...But I've gone faster in 4th gear. That's what's on paper. The 350 gets the equivalent mileage of the earlier 300's, despite the larger displacement. And, it's more liveable with stop and go driving (there's a lot of immediate ooomph). It's too bad the long-term engineering sux.

So my '87 300D with 3.0 engine has 143hp and 195lb-ft, top speed of 126mph. The '91 350SDL only has 134hp and 229lb-ft and a top speed of 108 with a 3.5?
I was considering creating a 350D 124 thinking it'd have more power, you guys sure about that 134hp thing? That's lethargic, they must have all of the acceleration of a 220D!

No, you absolutely don't want a 603.970 in a W-124. |

Aww, I was already grafting the trunk badge.

The 350 has limited hp because of emission controls. This can be remedied. The later 603.971 engines had the full 148 hp. But, as with any diesel, these figures can easily be boosted by turning up the fuel...This procedure is especially not advised with the 350 until whatever the heck goes wrong with these things is found out. If the rods didn't bend, they would be ~15% more powerful than the 3.0 liter versions, and if the pistons had multivalve cutouts, a 24-valve head could be made to fit...And the 3.5 would have the same kind of advantage over the OM606. If only... "All the acceleration of a 220D..." LOL...Try driving one sometime. I think my riding mower has nearly the same hp.

No trap in the 603.970 so it's odd MB didn't use the simpler exhaust manifold from the 603.971 which is very similar if not identical to the Euro/non-trap 603.96 manifold.
