cv boots ripped open

I'm going to change my cv boots on my 300D. Someone on this forum said something about split boots that can be installed with out removing the axels. Does any body know where to get this split boots?

Split boots are a bad idea, if you have driven with the boots torn, then they are contaminated with dirt and dust, and the whole axle should be replaced. There is a flex-boot system called the "Astoria Flexx Boot" (do a search on the forum about it)....thats an option too. Or visit dieselgiant.com and look around, he has a DIY on how to install them.

You should have posted this in the "Diesel Discussion"....perhaps a mod will move it.

I'd like to try the split boots first. My mechanic checked the axels and didn't indicate that they needed to be replaced. One is just starting to make a slight noise. So if I can get by by replacing the boots and magic grease I'll do that. But I wan't to try it with the split boot to see if it eliminates the noise. If it does I'll replace the boots with the good ones. So, does any body know where to get the split boots?

If it was starting to make noise then putting a new boot on it is like trying to do CPR on a sparrow....its just not going to work....the joint is shot and needs replacement.

I've never even seen split boots for these cars. All I've heard is that they don't work.

I agree with Pawo......don't try to reboot UNLESS you know precisely when the boot first split open and caught it right away. Dirt in there is a bad thing. The fact that it's making noise - even slight noise, is not a great sign.

I'm not saying it's going to fail tomorrow.....but you're probably throwing money away on the boots.

Buy some gorilla tape or heavy-duty 3M duct tape, squirt some grease in there with a turkey baster and wrap the torn boot up. I did this to my own rear axle 2000 miles ago. I also zip-tied the ends.

I forgot you did that ... that's cool that it's still holding up. I'm glad my axles are relatively new.

Yah - Chad tipped me off on the gorilla tape but I couldn't find it at the time (although my trip to Lowes that day did lead to $0.75/sf Pergo floor).

I used the 3M stuff instead. I'm sure others will chime in with many more miles driven this way.

Good luck either way.

My own boots have looked like they want to tear for the past 50k..../4 years...but never have so far. Once they do I'll just put in CVJ axle replacements....and call it good.

you can replace your boots easily without the flexx gun, just use the long funnel from autozone and some boots AZ part #580339 614-001, $12.00 and some 90wt lube and slide those boots on. there was a recent thread about it, and a u-tube video. its easy. (or you can buy the really kewl $300 flexx gun)

The hard part is finding the OE lube to refill the joint, don't use the grease included w/ the boot it is inappropriate.

When I looked for split boots last year I never found any that fit. Is there some one who makes them. I replaced my axles with rebuilt ones.

You did not say what year your 300Dis.
With in the last 30 days 2 members have bought brand new axles from NAPA. I believe 1 member mentioned the were Ultra 8 brand. Most likely Chinese but new with a warranty. Kragen (Partsamerica) has rebuilts (8mm Homokinetic type) axles for around $98 (3 months ago they were only $78). If you order them on the internet for in store pick up you get $5 discount. If you order 1 each from a different store you will get $5x2 discount. But be sure to check the internet site to see if this shows up. No shipping charge for in store pickup.
You might want to weigh the cost of the boots and how you are going to install the boots over the what I call the "Cans" that protect the CV joint and the tool it takes to crimp the boot clamps. After you are done you have no Warranty except your own wallet.
If you have Homokinteic type axles you will have a "Can" on each end. If you have the Annular type axles you will have the "Can" on the differential end of the axle and a CV joint with 5-6 visible bolts on the wheel side of the axle.
Depending on the year of your 300D you can use either type of axles on your car as long as you use them as a pair of the same axles. The Homokinetic type cost less than the Annular type

That's awesome! That guy's great! Only problem is that I have sworn never to crack another nasty, stinky, greasy CV boot ever again. It's like the grease is made from the Blob or something. It gets on you, then it covers you...

That one had me rolling on the floor!! :F ROFL!!

I might try and do the "slip the boot on" method using the stuff from autozone this summer....I'd like to not have to worry about them. First I am going to see if the dealer can get me the lube to fill the boots with though...

I know there's Mercedes stuff, but I'd think about the LubroMolly CV joint lube with MoS2.
Gotta love the MoS2.
