Oil Leak from H-E-double hockey sticks
I just got my 83 300 D turbo (the Rattlemobile) back on the road, after having the torque converter, bolts, and flex plate replaced. All told, the car was out of commission for nearly four months.
Now that she's back on the road, I've noticed that the slow oil leak where the oil filter canister joins the block has worsened considerably. Even though the part is only $2 from Phil, I'm hoping to hear from some advice from those who have fixed this evidently common problem in the past. Any tips or tricks that would help me out would be much appreciated. Does the oil need to be drained prior to this repair? I have less than 350 miles on a new batch of Delo. I'd love to find a FSM that works with Mac so that I don't have to ask such annoying questions, but have had no luck so far. Thanks for your help, RSCarey |

Try tightening the bolts before attempting a replacement. I have fixed leaks in that location in that manner before.

Replacing the filter housing gasket is not difficult provided you short hex bits to access the attaching bolts. Make sure to remove all of the original gasket. I would recommend also replacing the gasket on the rear of the housing while it's off. And procure some new seals for the turbo oil line. |

Thanks!
Good call in replacing the turbo oil line gasket as well.

x2 This worked for my leak at the canister - PO told me his mechanic thought it was a rear main seal leak - you can imagine how happy I was that it wasn't
