If my life depended on removing this caliper....

I'd be a dead man by now...Their is two bolts that remove the caliper. I've tried half a can of pb bolt remover and nothin'! Any advice?

An 18" breaker bar and a few hard impacts with your hand. You could also try heat.

heat and a breaker bar sir

I removed them with a 1/2 drive ratchet. Took a lot of effort too since they were installed with loctite(which you should do as well)

I'll triple the call for heat and impact or breaker bar. A little oxy/propane torch can be a real help in times like these.

are you using a full contact socket? 6 point if it's a 6 point bolt, allen if it's allen... I don't remember... anyway, use a GOOD socket, and make sure it's 1/2" drive. get a good breaker bar, or an impact wrench. it should come out no problem... PB and the ilk are of no use on these bolts. the threads are under the rotor, so there is noplace for the heat either. PRAY that the PO did not use loctite green or red... if they did, you will be further ahead to just pull the upper and lower ball joints and replace the entire spindle...

Ok I'll go get a breaker bar and I don't have any loctite so I guess I'll get that too...Man this stuff can take time...Thanks for the help!

Spindles are 350 bucks right. Jesus I am praying now....These are probably the original factory calipers. Do they install them with that crazy loctite?

Chad300tdt 04-17-2008 02:29 PM

Use Blue loctite on the caliper bolts. I used a 1/2 inch 19mm impact rated socket on the breaker bar. Use a hammer on the breaker bar if you need to.

You're looking at the bolts upside down so make sure you aren't tightening them.:P

I actually broke a breaker bar loosening a caliper bolt. A torch finally did the trick.

vstech 04-17-2008 02:40 PM

if the bolts are rusted that badly, you may want to get a new set from MB that already has the BLUE loctite on the threads... that way you know you have good bolts, and the correct amount of the correct loctite.
IMPACT is MUCH better than a breaker bar on rusty bolts... but a QUALITY breaker bar should work if the bolts don't have the wrong loctite on them.

Well I'm considering using the calipers that are still on there. The pistons were grimy and I cleaned off the junk. One of the seals behind the piston is a little ripped. Is that a big concern?

Only real problem besides some gunk is that the bleeder bolt snapped off. The dealer can replace it. I just have to figure out how to get the bold out of the hole.....

Use a screw extractor.

Any auto parts store stocks the bleeder valves.

Ok another issue. One of the break pads went back in nicely but the other won't go back in. How can I push that piston back a bit to allow clearance for the new pad? Thanks.
