Clear hard fuel lines? Anyone replace them? (OM 616/617)
 

Im getting ready to do a full fuel system refresh (clean tank, new rubber lines, getting the dang fuel filter bolt not too leak :) ) in preparation for B100. Should I replace my hard plastic fuel lines near the IP while I am at it? Mine are now tea colored...but they aren't leaking or doing anything bad.

Have not seen much on the subject, so I am guessing they dont often require attention.

Is mostly good ol black rubber hose and buna orings that are bothered by B99.

We replaced all three of them on the 77 240D. There was a parts mixup trying to order the return line from the pump to the fuel filter, and once we realized that the two lower lines were so cheap (I think one was $10, the other around $15) we just replaced all three. I don't think it needed to be done, but the parts were already in hand and it was cheap, so why not?
The clear plastic won't stay clear for long, but the new stuff was considerably less brittle than the old, and after 30 years it just seemed like a good idea.

Thats sort of along the lines of what I'm thinking...I'm going to have the whole fuel delivery system apart potentially.

For clarification for those reading about bio-diesel: the B100 will not affect these lines (as TM mentioned).

I had to replace the line that has the 3 way connection on top of the fuel filter. mine are coffee colored. I was hooking mine back up to the new engine and the darn thing snapped off at the top fitting. :eek:
These things get brittle with age, and it snapped like a potato chip.

This was on a Friday and the part came in on Tuesday:(. shut me down the whole weekend :mad:.


new one from dealer and ordered from an indie shop was $40.00. the other two are probably cheaper.

amazing how soft and bendable the new one is:rolleyes:.

A good (temporary) quick fix would probably be rubber vac hose of the right diameter to fit snug over the barbed ends....

A fellow member (whom shall remain nameless) once pointed me to mercedesparts.com......I think those lines were only $6?

oooo, they're like $30 at *source, IIRC.

Once in a while I have seen them POP up on E-Bay.

Actually the previous owner had done exactly that to the 3-way hose that charmalu mentioned. I have no idea how long ago it was done, but it was seeping pretty heavily. Our plan originally was to replace that one hose, but the local dealer accidentally ordered us one of the lower two hoses, and then we saw how cheap they were combined with how old ours were and she decided to replace all three.
I think it only took a couple days for the dealer to get them in, but I don't do the ordering, I just do the replacing and advising.

I used fuel injection hose with clamps on the barbs on one car to replace them. It worked fine.

Yah, I never actually ordered new line - I just know where to buy them cheap.

I put 5/16" rubber fuel hose over the hose barbs (with the nylon still on) and hoseclamped it on - per the advice on here. It's been working fine.

I nicked one when I was replacing my primer pump so I needed a quick fix too....although it's shaping up to be a permanent repair:).
