Turbo Anyone? (95 E300D)

I'm thinking about putting a turbo on my 95 E300D. I have very little knowledge on whether this can work or makes sense at all. Does anyone know if it's possible to pull one off an 87 or any other model Mercedes that would fit in my car? How big of an effect do you think it would have on my hp and mpg? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the E300D already has a turbo......

For the w124 diesels, I believe only the 87 was turbocharged. I know for sure that mine, which is also a w124, isn't. In the US at least, they didn't put them back until the 98 model year.

Huh,, Seems to be the case. I never knew that. I just assumed all 124 diesels were turbocharged. I moved your post over to diesel discussion, I think you'll get better answers there.

The '87 OM603 and the '90-93 OM602 were turbocharged. The OM606 from the '95 to '99 model years was normally aspirated until '98, when it got the turbo (in the W210 chassis).

You are better off putting in a turbo engine rather that adding a turbo to a n/a engine.

The 95 uses a 4 valve head, earlier turbo diesels (OM603/OM602) are two valve heads.

Not a practical upgrade.

Never just slap a turbo on a non-turbo MB diesel. You're only asking for trouble. Turbocharged engines have more beefed-up internals and you'd have to upgrade those as well.

While no speed rocket, the NA OM606 isn't that weak when working properly. Make sure your Bowden cable is adjusted properly to take advantage of shifting at higher RPM's (this engine likes to rev) and make sure your injectors and fuel filters are in proper working condition.

If your 124 uses a similar IFI injection computer as used in the 210, swapping in a turbo motor is much more expensive than you would suspect. On the 210 you would need the IFI computer for a turbo car. Not from the turbo car, as it won't work in another car once 40 starts have been achieved. You will need a brand new $1300 box.

124 om606 model has mecanic dieselpump, whith fast lift cam. Makes rattling noise at 2500rpm whith 7mm feed pistons, but works.

Block has important oil sprays allready from factory.

The oil sprays were going to be my question as I didn't think they were fitted to the N/A models...

Does your car use the IFI injection computer, as used in my '96? The fact that it has a mechanical injection pump DOES NOT IMPLY that you don't have the IFI injection computer.

My '96 has a mechanical pump and a computer. I'm pretty sure that I could not drop a turbocharged engine into my car without buying a new computer for the later year. Yes, I do mean BUYING a NEW $1300 computer. A computer which has been used to start a car 40 times will not work in another. You may be able to take both the IFI computer and the DAS from a donor car, but I have no idea if that would work. I have seen nothing in the FSM to indicate that this is a valid option.

If you have a pump with a mechanical control, you could swap in a 603 injection pump and it might be happy. You could use a 603 pump and add your own mechanical linkage, but then you would lose the actions of all of those intake flaps.

I think you can tell the difference between the computer controlled ones and the regular ones because the comp. ones are fly by wire. Mine just has a throttle wire going to a sensor rather than the IP... What does the '96 and '95 have?

My '96 is as you describe. There is a throttle cable going to the TPS. The '96 has a bowden cable going to the transmission; this cable is absent in '97 and following years. There is no mechanical connection between the pedal and the injection pump.

Let me add here that I am genuinely curious about what is in the '95. If it uses a different system for controlling the flaps and IP, I am all ears.
