about to purchase a 300D Turbo Diesel

so there is a 1982 300DT that someone want's to sell it to us for $500 , here is the good's and bad's

THE BAD

1.Transmission, no forward and sometimes it reverse...(creepy)
2.Engine needs some tune up
3.Makes a loud creeking sound when turning left and right (moving or at stand still)
4.Rear bumper pushed in (i got to admit it look better that way)
5.Needs repainting

THE GOOD

1.Modified exhaust system (good exhaust system but hung by wires )
2.A factory installed car security system that still function (suprisingly)
3.Inteiror is in great condition
4.Shock are still good
5.Brand new Goodyear tires
6.Body is straight (no dings or dents)

what do think this is worth $500????

(srry no pic avaliable)

thx

Transmission

With a bad transmission, only you can decide what it's worth. A co-worker just spend about $2K for a rebuilt transmission for his '80 300SD. For him, it was worth it. For me, it wouldn't have been. I would have been pulling a junkyard transmission and bolting it in for $200, crossing my fingers that it would be sufficient.

My 2 cents,

SteveM.

Let's see...bad transmission, questionable engine, needs front end work, needs exhaust repair...

You don't say where you are, but in most parts you can find one in nice shape for less than $3000 - I'm guessing it will cost a lot more than $2500 to fix all that, and I haven't even mentioned the bad paint.

I'd keep looking.

I've got my car listed for $3150 and engine is sweet (that's why the car is named "Candy"), transmission shifts just like it suppose to, working odometer that reads 217,800ish, 2 new rear tires, good tires on the front, interior is great except cracked dash, driver center arm rest, and missing the storage net on the back of the passenger front seat.....needs paint; have a front right fender to throw into the deal.

OH, and working AC and new alternator, battery, 2 new glow plugs, all lights work.

Centrally located in Memphis, TN.

Question on the transmission do yo guys think that the trans not shifting into gear has to do with all of the B's pistion not functioning and i forgot to mention that the all eletrical conponents are working and A/C works but needs recharge....

You are about to purchase a 300D. You see a "T" on that trunk anywhere?

My car is a 300D turbo diesel and my title says 300DT as well. I was told by Mercedes Benz the "T" was added to the car model between 1982 and 1985 and only applied to the turbo model but did not appear on the trunk emblems.

With a bad transmission, questionable engine, bad front suspension, body damage and paint it sounds like it worth about scrap price.

Hey Actros,
I don't know how far this is from you or if the simple elegance of a standard 240D is right for you,
or if this is still available, but........

I just paid 200.00 for an 84 D with fresh paint, perfect interior, blue dash cap...( anybody wanna bet what it looks like under the cap?) perfect running, but tranny not shift out of 1st gear. and it is hard to shift the shifter from D to R or P with the engine running... maybe some linkage issues, maybe some valve body issues... anyway, I have 5 other D's for parts, So I will be getting it on the road shortly.
With as many problems as that one is showing... you better have a lot of money and time to get that car driving.
but on the positive side, you can sell those tires/wheels for what the car is selling for. probably... so the money is not wasted...
if it were me, I would do a ...

OMG!!! has Mozilla been taken over by microsoft? firefox has JUST insisted on a restart AGAIN to go up to .14.... that's what 3 version updates in the last month?... sorry for the rant, I hate computer updates all the time.....

back on topic...
I would do a serious Craigslist search of states on a bus route and find a better vehicle for just a bit more money...
for instance I just got a creampuff 83SD with less than 172K miles on it and paid less than that for it. craigslist is my friend.

If its not rusty it could be a great daily driver deal, and if the interior is nice, 500 doesnt seem out of line.

Prices do range all accross the country(s). Paint can be done pretty cheaply if you do all the prep and body work yourself.

The thing is if you like the car and it's not all rusted out, then this could be a good buy for you if your willing to do the work it needs. A rebuilt transmission would cost you about $1500 and the other things you could work on once it's moving. These are very dependable and one of the few cars you could put the money and time into that is actually worth it. I say go for it if you have the desire for this car and if not let me know!

The fact that it is an '82 makes it a turbo. Don't give in to amateur night. Trust the trunk!
