1971 220D Mercedes oil leak

I have a 1971 220D (Mercedes). I just started it and noticed a lot of oil underneath. The oil (or transmission fluid) is leaking out of the bottom of the little radiator unit that sits to the right of the main radiator unit. Seems to be coming out right at the bottom of the unit where the return connects to the unit.

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Thanks,

Vernon

Sounds like oil cooler lines ... replace them ASAP. You don't want to drain the engine oil.

It could even be the cooler itself. As Chad mentioned, that kind of leak can drain the oil out of the engine. Check first to see if the connections are loose. If they're not, then it could be the lines are cracked or even the cooler has a leak.

Hazardous dealings with fittings there - gotta use 2 wrenches and penetrating oil to loosen em up. Aluminum oil cooler casing easy to crack. Fast temporary bypass repair while yer scrounging parts would be disconnect the oil lines at filter casing and plug the holes with bolts.

Is it an auto transmission or manual?

If its the oil cooler that is leaking, it has to be replaced. They aren't cheap.

Palangi,

Yes, I had a 220D that had a cooler. The core was made out of steel and it rusted thru.

wash it down with some brake clean and wipe it dry. Start your engine and see where it's actually leaking from before you just start replacing stuff.

Thanks, everyone for your answers so far. It is a standard. The oil cooler does look pretty rusty.

Vernontnh,

My 300SDs and 300SDLs all have the "standard" transmission. They are all automatic transmissions.

Perhaps U mean a manual transmission?

Just for clarity.

Clean up your oil cooler and identify where this leak is coming from and fix it ASAP! This is actually good news! It could have happened while your going down the freeway and you could be looking for an engine!
