84 300D fuel problems, won't start...

Hi,

I recently replaced the fuel primer pump (it was leaking) on my 300D and now can't get the car to start. The prefilter doesn't seem to fill with fuel; very little fuel is pumped into the filter when I push the pump.

Any ideas? Keep pumping and have faith?

Thanks for any help!

You do have to pump it a lot. The primer pump pulls fuel through the pirmary filter.

Thanks for the response... at this point I'd guess I'd given it well over a thousand pumps. Keep going? I'm happy to keep going if there's a good chance it just needs more pumping; I guess I'm just a little skeptical at this point. I should hear a hiss at the fuel filter bolt when it's successfully bled, correct?

Reassurance will strengthen my arms and my resolve. Thanks again.

Try removing the fuel cap. If fuel flows, it is a possible bad cap or vacuum thing-a-ma-jig that is under the car.

It should have been primed in about 30 or so pumps.

Also, check the rubber fuel lines under the car. They can be cracked and allowing air to come it.

You can use a mitiy vac with the brake bleeder cup to try an pull fuel in as well. I did that after I blew the lines back with the air compressor.

Thanks...I will try removing the fuel cap. I thought the lines that went from the fuel tank to the engine compartment were steel... they're rubber also?

They are metal, but have rubber in between like under the hood. The rubber hoses isolate the movement of engine/frame and frame/trunk.
