I don't think this was a US only change though. It appears all 617.952's went to that HP and Top speed rating at 9/83 according to what references we find. Nothing specific about US models. All of them it seems.

I forgot about the 10th spot signifying the year code. Interestingly enough, my Euro MB does not follow this sequence since the 10th spot in the vin is actually a number and has nothing in common with the year. In fact none of the numbers have anything in common with the year. However, the model number is clearly dicernable in the vin, 123243 which designates it as a 230CE.

They probably changed dyno methods. Temperature, fuel and many other factors can change HP readings by more than 2hp.

The use of KKK and Garrett was random. No specific model, year or region was locked into either one.

Thats strange. Not all, but a good majority of the ~83 and earlier 123's I've seen have the garret. ~83 and later ones have the kkk.

My 81 SD says 195 HP

Factory metal plate just in front of the radiator says 195HP on my 1981 300SD.

Wishful thinking at 195HP

Went out and looked again. It actually says advertised HP 120. This is on a black and white sticker which describes the emission system, lash settings, etc. instead of on the metal plate.

Mea culpa

I have an 84 and 2 85's right now- there is subtle differences in the turbos, but I think they are both garret. my 84 wagon is, fer sure. did tehy mess w/ the cams?

I guess i would have the 125 hp version in all 3?

My personaly guess is the turbo chargers. On my 84 and 85 engines the blades look small in the turbo, I say a 79 300sd and the blades look bigger, not as flattened. I guess garret vs kkk. That or camshaft.
