Hi Dana -- may I ask where your "minute, hard to find" vacuum leak is?

My fear is that my EGR and/or flapper valve might be leaking, too. I need to put the mightyvac on them and see how long they hold vacuum. I wonder why MBZ didn't just go with a pressure-type system like gsxr's in the first place?

BigBen, what wastegate did you order? Is it going to require drilling of the mount and/or modification of the shaft? I should probably just go that route and be done with it. My Jetta is EGR-less; I would feel better knowing the Benz is, too.

Thanks!

I think I heard somewhere that MB put all the computer controlled emissions stuff and wastegate in there to avoid the use of a cat. The idea was to have more precise control over the engine's intake parameters in order to have a cleaner exhaust over a wider range, which allowed them to get rid of the cat that was used in the 87 diesels.

That makes sense... wish they'd stuck with the old style wastegate actuator, though!

It's a used one, I've been told it was taken off a 1998 Jetta. Can't tell for sure. It will require modification to the actuator rod. The part number for the wastegate actuator gsxr has shown on his pictures is not available from my local Garrett turbo expert. He told me he could only get this actuator if it was readily mounted on a complete turbo...

Bye

The '87 190D 2.5 turbo had a spring-closed / vacuum-open actuator on that engine, I don't know if it is a direct replacement on the later turbos though.

I used an actuator from a 98 Jetta, had to drill a couple of holes&cut off part of the Jetta bracket and make a simple link from the actuator rod to the lever on the turbo.Very simple if you have a hacksaw and a drill. i havnt figured how to post pictures on this site but can email you a couple if you are interested.Look up some of my old posts, i just decided that as old as all this vacuum operated stuff is that its just not likely to be reliable and the parts are expensive. Thanks, all. I'd like to avoid pulling the turbo to install this, so ideally, the part would be plug & play w/o mods. I'll see what I can round up.
