Going to pick up an 87 300d, trap oxidizer?

Alright so i am going to look at two 87 300d turbos this weekend. One with ~250k and one with ~300k. How do i tell if the trap oxidzer has been replaced? Just go under there and look after the down pipes and see if the cat or oxidizer looks new? I will be test driving them both, if there is anything else to check for please let me know. My original plan was to get a 350 SDL, but i was advised not to, then i was going to settle for the 300sdl and swap it into my 201, but NOW i found a small crop of 124 603 turbos, so i am anxious to get my hands on one (or two). I also am aware of the cracking head issue, but am not sure what numbers are considered 'safe'. Any help appreciated!

The trap is easy. Either it has a large metal abomination or a cast iron tube with a heat wrap.

It will be visible on the left side of the engine as soon as you open the hood.

#14 is the highest cracking risk with #17-22 later redesigns.

A great write up but that would scare me away from buying one after reading the first few paragraphs.

Are you closer to the left end or the right end? I wish Location was a required field in registration. I always find myself asking. If you lived near me, Elvis and I could help.

Actually this may not be the case if it had recall work done. My 85 300SD still has the "metal football" but the innards were replace when recall work was performed. I have yet to open it up and see what is actually in there now.

On the OM603 in the 124 and 126, the "football" goes away.
