That is why I asked the question about model year. My car has a transplant (complete engine) from a 1987 300D (603.960). The motor that was replaced was 603.961
The 603.960 seem faster than the .961 in my opinion.

Just to clear this part up the car is an '86, which really doesn't make a difference to the timing chain, just FYI.
As for getting pictures up, not happening. Dad's lives in AZ, I live in MT. Started the project with him when I was visiting my parents, that's when it started blowing oil/smoke, since then I had to come home to MT. Dad's totally capable of doing the job as he's a retired aircraft mechanic and taught me most of what I know. He just doesn't have a computer or internet access which puts me in the middle, that also means I won't be able to get pics from him in a timely manner. Still not heard back from Roy(whunter), think I'll email him too. At this point I'm curious what you guys think about just using the old chain. I'm thinking that if he reconnects it and finds that it's not too stretched, why not. As I said he has 247K on it, and was going to replace it because he is pretty much already there. He changed which ever guide(s) he could access, but is on hold now because of the issue with the size of the new chain. Opinions? |

OK, here's mine -- Have him call Phil (From the buy parts link above) and order the proper chain and install it. Couldn't be more simple.
Here's the number -- (888) 333-4642

That was simply a matter of the .960 being in better tune than the .961... mechanically, they are identical in almost every way. The only thing I was able to figure out that was different was the coolant pipe on the back side of the water pump housing is different between the two, and the location of the motor mount brackets was slightly different (I think). But that was it. Same injection pump, cam, intake, exhaust, you name it. Identical power ratings, too.

The oil filter housing might be different as well beyond just the lid.
The mount arms are different because the .961 uses the 123 style rubber mounts with separate dampers while the .960 uses fluid filled dampers. If you're really nitpicky, some .960s have the fuel thermostat mounted to the block ahead of the mount arm rather than on the arm itself which is more common. Sixto 87 300D |

That sounds about right, Sixto. My early .960 and late .960 have the fuel t-stat it different places, as you describe. But outside the minor stuff like this, the power was identical for them. The third digit change mostly indicated different exterior equipment, not internal stuff. (that is NOT the case with the 602.961 and .962, though... lots of differences there.)

Holy crap; this is honestly one of the most perfectly informative posts I've seen in 13 years on the Internet.
