Looks like I am a sissie X3. 2 weeks ago when I adjusted my valves I tested the several Mercedes valve adjusting wrenches that I have. 2 long handled sets; 1set of- Hazet (2769) 615 589 00 01 00, 1 set of Heyco 621 589 01 01, and a set with a short handled Hazet (2769-1) plus 1 short handled home made wrench.

The Heyco wrenches have smaller heads which might fit into some areas easier:

The shorter handled wrenches were easier to use on the 5th cylinder near the fire wall otherwise I prefered the long handled wrenches. I some times see wrench sets with 1 short and 1 long handled wrench perhaps this is helpful on the 5th cylinder. I felt that I got a better feel with the long handled wrenches when it came time to tighten the nuts.

I bought a set from them, but didn't like them. The silver paint scraped off and made a mess, the bottom wrench needed thinning, and I had a problem reaching the last valve. I eventually bought a Hazet set.

EDIT: In all fairness, I should mention that they have changed their design. Haven't tried them, though.

What of Mercedes$ources products is good?

I bought my wrenches from them before I knew any better. The same as above happened, the paint started chipping off right away, the heads were too thick to adjust both nuts at the same time, and the thick/long handles make adjusting #5 harder than it should be.

Right wrenches would make job easier

I adjusted my valves on my 240d for the first time last week. I had to adjust them twice. Mostly because I was fighting with the wrenches. I tried to make a offset wrench with a Craftsmen forged 14mm wrench. The wrench snapped when I tried to bend it in the vice with a hammer. I should have known better. Finally I ground down a cheapo Chinese stamped 14mm to use as the bottom wrench. I have to admit, as a former aircraft mechanic, It was a PITA. I was wishing for the proper wrenches. I didn't know they were available. My advice would be, get the right tools for the job. Dave

On E-bay the Hazet wrench set is only about $5 more than the Mercedes$ources set and you get a 3 wrench set (not a 2 wrenches) that retain their resale value and are easy to sell.
