Nice! I've been kicking around the idea of putting a 616 or 617 into an old Willys CJ 2a or 3a.

About the only parts that I used besides the engine and trans were the exhaust head pipe, speedo and shifter. Oh, and the glow controller.

That would be a squeeze unless you recess the firewall for clearance. I have a 53 CJ3A and have done the measurements.

That's what I figured, that's why I was leaning towards the 616 4 cyl. Thought that might be a better fit.

To bring back an old post and add another update, I have been driving the truck for over 2 years and put over 17K miles on it. This has been a fun conversion and gets a lot of looks. No problems at all from the drivetrain.

THAT IS SO DARN COOL! I love that fact that is now has serious miles on it.
Did ya ever paint it?

As for Jeeps, the CJ-5 CJ-7 is a perfect fit for a 617.
I was going to drop my spare 617 into the '74 but the AMC 232 is so sweet I never had the heart to rip it out...

55 F350 on FTE had mentioned this swap to me, it seems pretty well done and has impressed a fair number of people there.

To bring back an old thread and update it once again I now have approx. 65K miles on the truck with only minor issues and no major failures of the drivetrain.
I took the truck and 1600 lb. teardrop trailer on a 15K mile trip to AK this spring, only trouble with the truck was a trans leak that a friend helped me fix in WA state.
Over the life of this rig it has averaged 22-23 MPG solo and around 18 MPG towing the teardrop trailer, and it has towed it approx 30K miles

Awesome!
I want to do this same thing to a 1950's Willys wagon so bad...
