Yeah, on the drivers side it has one tiny spot of peeling, you have to look real hard to see it and it doest have any right angles in the peeling so it shouldn't spread. Same with the other side, almost perfect. I cleaned them with some brasso and put them on the car. They shouldn't peel anymore, this car is a garage queen.

I think ill skip on the door handles, I realized my key situation wouldnt be the same. id either have to get a key for the locks and have a different key or swap the tumblers, which i dont know if they will just swap over, or swap the little handle parts, which i think may work if its is the same exact part, just cast in steel instead of plastic. I looked at it and its an allen screw and a little pin holding it to the handle. But another thing, i really dont want to take the door panels off. On these old cars something always breaks. I think ill just leave it as is

I have a picture of this manganese brown 300D and it has these shiny windshield cowels.
I'm happy to know that they were in fact chrome!

I don't think you have to remove the door panels to remove the door handles.

When my Son's 79 300D was totalled, I swiped the cowl moldings and put them on my '84--never looked back. Go for it!

jim, i think 82 was the last year. i've also seen 83-85 model year cars with chrome/black mouldings, but only black cowls. i think the black moldings were a 240d thing in N-Am, but maybe optional chrome in the rest of the world, even for 240d.

there is one screw that must be removed from the inside that keeps the door handle in place, so yes the door panel must be removed

by the way guys, there were aftermarket cowls made for mercedes. the way to tell the difference, other than the lack of part number stamped on the underside, is that the aftermarket ones had larger rectangular holes in the mesh grill between the chrome slats. someone mite have a pic of them side-by-side

WTB: Looking for two sets of R107 cowl louvers
I am redoing the top of my 380SL so that the hood points 90 degrees, for ease of service. I discovered that by removing the cowl louvers, no problem to do this. As I looked at what's underneath, I discovered that I could carefully cut a small section of the louvers to allow the hinge to pop through, and lift up the hood.
Either I'll cut an entire section out, or just a small section for the hinge to pass through and make a rubber/plastic/aluminum/metal cover for each slot. Anyway, before I can do this, I need a couple sets of cowl louvers to work with, to see how it all fits together Sellers, please cotact me privately. Photos would be good too if available. I want to see what I'm buying before it shows up. Cash/Paypal/check, whatever. Thanks!.

Funny about this thread.... I saw it months ago.
Here is my take on these "shiny" cowl pieces. At some point it may have been deemed a safety issue? At 6' 1" my head hits the roof in my car unless I put the seat all the way back, all the way down and recline it. Even then I can see the cowl grille's. I could see where "glare" could be a problem with these things in the right conditions. That combined with the cost may have been the reason for the change. Just a thought. I like the chrome ones just because they are metal (even if they are "pot metal"). Purdy...

The Cowel Grills are Plastic, not pot metal. just some type of chrome coating on the plastic.
I still like the chrome grills, more chrome the better. I have a 240 now that Iam going through the issues with, and it is getting chrome grills, have one one so far. next is the chrome piece under the tail lights. I don`t think the 116 door handles will fit the 123. the outside looks the same, but how they fasten to the door, that piece is at a different angle where the screws fit in. They would look a lot better than black door handles. Charlie

Yeah, I thought they were plastic as well. I just looked at an 82 300D that had them--they really stood out on the manila beige/creme yellow color. They were pretty chipped up though.
Kept nice they'd look great on some colors, like an anthracite gray 300D I'm starting to drool over. Could the grills be refinished?

snook: in '83 they switched to no chrome on both the side cladding and the chrome cowls. i think the no-chrome was either a '83 model year change thing (introduction of w201 which had all black side cladding might have had something to do with it), or the safety issue you mention.
123 and 116 handles are not compatible, but 116 and 107 used the same handles for the fronts yeah the grills can be re-chromed, or they actually make aftermarket grills in which the rectangles that comprise the 'grill' are longer and shaped differently. the mercedes one is a higher quality--i held them up side by side to make that determination

Do it!
As stock and as clean as your car is, this is the kind of mod you should feel comfortable with. It's easily reversible, it's OEM and it's nothing drastic. I think it would be a nice touch.
I have chrome cowls on my 81 wagon and I think they look way better than the black. It ties them in to the rest of the chrome instead of the window seal and wiper arms.
