Your opinions on chrome windshield cowl covers

I was at pick n pull today and scored two near perfect (only a tiny amount of peeling, you cant even see it. They're the best Ive ever seen) chrome cowl covers for 3 bucks a piece. Whats your opinion? These are for the 85, a near showroom condition car (some would argue that it is showroom condition ).

I like them, I think they accent the chrome grill and star perfectly. They polished up really nice. I have them installed, and they look nice. But so do the black plastic ones!

The problem is the car is so stock. Nothing has changed on this car, ive even kept all the vacuum emissions intact. Im having trouble deciding whether to leave it alone, or put mods on it (but dignified mods, for example chrome factory cowls) as it is that nice. A friend "dieselkraut on the forums" told me that the w116 door handles will work on a w123. Im very interested in adding those also. They are SOLID metal, compared to the plastic w123 ones. They would just be that much more nice. My opinion is the more metal the better. What would you people do, I just dont want to come to a meet and have people disgusted that I put w116 handles and cowl covers that were from an 82

Which pleases your more?
What you like or what others like?
Nothing you have suggested has to be permanent. Do it and live with it - keep the original parts in case you change your mind.

The W123 was one of the last chrome MBs with chrome trim and chrome bumpers. I think transplanting OEM chrome parts from an earlier W123 to a later one where black plastic was placed is a safe and easily reversible mod. If you think that some MB owners are going to be disgusted with your car because it has too much chrome, let them be disgusted. Most of the MB owners I know aren't like that, it's the "silk stocking" crowd who acts like that mostly, you know, never got their hands and face dark with grease and dirt from being underneath a OM61x, and take their car to the dealer to replace a domelight bulb, lol. Ultimately, it's all up to you, it's your car.

This is what Im thinking too, Its reversible, and chrome pleases me. And Id imagine people would love to see great chrome cowls that arent torn up and chrome s class handles. Ok, new thing. The handles. Im guessiong replacing the handles is easy, and I can practice on my parts car but What about the tumblers? DO you think I can switch them over? Has anyone ever does this mod before? I have a door handle somewhere in the garage im going to go dig it out now

I recall a guy over in Europe somewhere putting W116 door handles on his W123. It didn't look bad, but I think the black door handles seem match the black trim that's within close proximity to the handles better than chrome ones would. Then again, you'd never have to worry about using peanut butter again to rejuvinate greyed out door handles, lol.

I use megiuers vinyl cleaner and protectanct. The rubber on this car wasnt dried, but on my parts car it brought back even the bumper rubber. I remember I couldn't even get motor oil to seep into it

Put the chrome cowels on, they look a lot better that the black plastic. It`s your car, you have to live with it.

I put chrome ones on my 85 10 yrs ago. no one has noticed.but then mine is silver and they don`t show up as well as on yours being a darker color.

HMMMM 116 door handles. now I have something else to look for at PNP. more chrome, more Bling.

I even have 2 extra sets of chrome cowels out in the barn.

I agree. As long as its reversible it seems fine to me. The 107s are so plentiful that they will probably never reach true collector status anyway. They are very nice cars and you don't have to feel guilty about using them.

I probably would do the cowl but not the door handle just because of the amount of work involved.

I installed the chrome cowls on my 83 years ago.
Can't even remember what it looked like with the black ones......
I think 81 was last year of the chrome.

Easy, reversible upgrade.

BTW, the "chrome" plastic was only on the higher model cars, 240D always had black, same with the chrome bars below the taillights.

I upgraded my old 240D with 300D chrome as well, front and back.

I like them but its they are nearly unobtainium without any peeling. If they look clean I say put them on.

I like chrome too but I think there have to be limits. I think chrome wheel arch moldings are too cheesy.

Turbobenz,
Your car is sooooo beautiful. The Chrome covers will just be the icing on the cake. That is one slick car!!! and it goes like a bat outa H-E-Double Hockey Sticks. I remember you passing me on I-80 between Sac and the 37 turnoff. One fine car and the parts car you rescued isn't bad either.....

I agree that the wheel mouldings are cheesy> I was lucky, I removed them from my 380SE and there was just great original paint under them and NO rust!.
