Automobile technology really hasn't changed much at all since the 30's. Refinements and alterations is about it.

It's only in the last decade, thanks to computers, that actual progress has been made.

Reciprocating pistons, 2 valves, precombustion chamber, glow plug, injector, injection pump, etc... The only fundamental difference between that engine and the OM61x series is the change from an in-block cam to an overhead cam.
