Removing Water pump on w123, with a question

OK. So I got the water pump out, but I want to replace the gasket on the housing, too. I've gotten all the bolts out for this, except the bottom one, which is obstructed by the lower engine pully (the main one, I believe). How do I get access to this bolt? Is there a way to do it without removing the pully? If not, how exactly do I get that pully off? Thanks in advance...

There is a notch on that pulley, rotate the engine until the notch aligns w/ the bolt head.

Awsome. Thank you sir!

To answer you question on how to remove the pulley. Unbolt the 27mm center bolt. And then use a pulley puller to pop the balancer and pulley off.

I think I would choose the option in post #2......:D

Yeah, I was leaning toward that, too. But the info is greatly appreciated in either case. Thanks, guys! If you saw what I've been having to drive the past week (because my WP was just THROWING out coolant), I'm happy with anything I can get!

Removing the balancer is the last thing you want to do.

The notch is in the balancer. You need to remove the pulley and the vibration damper form the balancer (secured by six socket head cap screws), then rotate the crankshaft to align the notch in the balancer with the housing bolt. Don't even think about removing the balancer.

I agree don't think of it.

Why is that? I don't see a problem doing it. Sure you might drop it and jack it up. But there is only one way it will go back it's keyed on the crank.

First, its totally unnecessary.
Second, it's incredibly difficult to reinstall.
Third, if the balancer is not installed just right, the crankshaft can be seriously damaged.

I've never had difficulties in getting it installed... And I think I've done it five times now.

At any case if you do need to remove it (i.e. like getting to the front seal) you would do what I said earlier.

There have been countless examples (nearly) of folks with bad cranks caused by improper installation of the HB. I bought a 300d with a slightly wobbly HB and ended up buying a crank and going through the motor because of an improper installation of the HB and its tricky circular keys.

If you decide to take yours off that is your business but if your bad advice causes someone else to ruin their crank then you have done a real disservice to the MS community and the person who is out a couple of thousand fixing a problem that was avioidable in the first place.

Believe me this is not something to do unless absolutely necessary. And its not necessary in this case.

I don't wish to be harsh but this is a potentially very serious and costly mistake to make.

Point taken. Moral of the story, If you don't need to remove it. Then don't!

Exactly.
