Minimum Recommendations for a tool box

What do you consider to be the bare minimum for tools to do general repairs and maintenance on your car?

I have a smattering of (mechanical) tools and would like to make wise purchases to cover most contingencies. I've got plenty of woodworking tools, but not too many for working on my car.

Thanks for your suggestions.

1/2" drive ratchet and sockets
3/8" drive and sockets.. all metric of course
screw drivers
metric allen keys and or sockets
vice grips
mity vac
pliers
channel lock pliers
feeler gauges
valve adjustment wrenches
mirror
magnetic pickup tool
go-jo
rags
pieces of leather

you can go to sears and get one of those tool kits. I think I started out with the 150 piece kit. it comes with a decent case. But I've only used half of it since then. Metric only. I've been adding tools every now and then and now have a tool chest

Mity Vac? That's the thing for pumping your oil out from the top, right? Leather? What kind of leather and what is it for?

Mity vac makes a fluid extractor and a hand held vacuum pump (needed to trouble shoot your vacuum system).

I bought this set of tools and added a hex key socket set and an 18" breaker bar. I ended up buying a 10" extension for the 1/2" ratchet too.

the leather is used to wipe the transmission dip stick on and a separate one for the oil

Mercedes specifies, especially for the transmission, to use leather to wipe the dip stick

That sounds pretty obsessive. What's wrong with a clean paper towel?

Talking Tools for cheap!

Dee8go,
I've found that pawn shops are a great place to buy tools. Especially Craftsman (becauase you can return them to Sears if they're damaged). For the cost of a cheap Chineese tool set at Harbor Freight, you can get good quality US made tools that suite your needs. You don't end up with things you'll never use or ratchets that break on that one stuck bolt.

The Mighty Vac is a small hand held vacuum pump. It is a must-have for diagnosing vacuum problems and works really well for bleeding your brakes and clutch. There are wanna-be's for pretty cheap at harbor Freight but I like the quality of the Mighty-Vac and would recommend that one.

ps Garage sales can be a gold-mine for tools as well.

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought about looking at a couple of pawn shops.

No, I couldn't find the set without the personalization for the link. I only paid $200, so they charge quite a bit for the personalization.

The thing with leather is to avoid getting fibers in your trans fluid. You can wipe the stick with your finger and wipe your finger on a paper towel though.
