What will today's cars look like in Junkyards 2o years from now?

Somedays I watch my coworkers or neighbors proudly displaying their new BMW M3's or Volvo Quad Drive's with their advanced features and out-of-mischief I try to imagine what they will look like in a Junkyard or at a crusher in 2028 when today's toy becomes tomorrow's hand me down...

What I really lament is the passing of the Series Car. Great cars that stayed in production basically in the same form for a Decade. Like of course the Mercedes 240D and 300D, the SD's or Volvo 240, 740 and 940 or Toyota Corolla.

I dont think they make them like that now. The market is too competitive and they retool and redesign every two or three years..which is going to make it challenging for us Junkyard Bargainhunters.

I mean where are you going to find stacks of identical worn out and deceased series cars in 20 years? Everyone is driving throwaway cars like the Hyundai or $60,000 machines that won't be restorable because their technology is so eccentric. Try going to Autozone in 2028 and ordering a computer controlled shock absorber for a 2008 Volvo.

Also who is going to want to restore a SUV for fun? Just not the same as doing my Diesel.

They just don't make them them like that anymore.

Maybe our cars will go up in value as it becomes clear even to nonenthusiasts just how great they are.

I guess recycling a car on 2028 means instead of showing tin cans from cars, it will be plastic bottles from cars.

I'd restore SUVs. I've always liked them... some of the new ones don't do much for me stylistically, but I love the idea of them. Fuel economy doesn't bother me and they're awfully useful.

EDIT: Just to clarify something here, since it's a comment I make frequently - I certainly can't afford to drive low MPG things no matter what. I simply am willing to cut my distance down in order to keep driving what I like. it's not like I can drive a thousand miles a week at four miles per gallon or anything.. I'm just willing to economize in trips so I don't have to economize in car selection.

A crew cab pickup w/an 8' bed is way more useful than any SUV, IMHO. Try hauling 6 people, a fridge, and an engine in the back, with out a trailer in an SUV.

I have a feeling most of today's cars won't last 20 years, they will be in the yard and scrapped long before that....

heck maybe the engines wont be metal anyway

maybe they will be composite or ceramic in 10 more years. I just can't see restoring some plastic car to perfection...

That's what I think too. I think junk yards will become more and more scarce and beat cars will go direct to reman and recycle facilities. The reman industry already has buyers that scope out the yards for raw materials.

They will be crushed and recycled into new cars.

A lot less rust though, they really have figure out how to keep cars from rotting out.

Metal prices have stopped rising lately as China isn't buying as much scrap metal as their economy has experienced some slowing. This is good, means cars will be in the yards longer!
