My 81 300sd's speedometer stopped functioning, are there any things I need to look at before buying a new speedometer?

pull the lower kickpanel carpet and verify that the large bundle of wires has not come loose. that's what it was on mine.

Does the odometer work? If it still does that should mean you are getting the correct electrical input. If not the odometer could also be broken. I replaced my broken speedometer w/ a junkyard unit that I dialed up to the correct n mileage.
